Alright, my buddy Ben has been working on getting his Ogre Kingdoms playable and useful these days. He had a pretty poor start, so I figured this would be a fun challenge for myself as well. I have an Ogre Kingdoms army that I've never run, so this could be a chance to get some interesting games in. I don't have any dreams of beating current tournament lists, but maybe I can pose at least a challenge for some of them :).
Ogres are definitely not a top-tier army. They have poor shooting, mediocre magic, and close combat- their best thing- is still outclassed by several armies. Also, no flaming attacks, which is rough with all the regeneration out there. I tried to go for a lot of units, backed up with some useful shooting support in the form of Dogs of War cannons. There are some rumors that Dogs of War and Ogre Kingdoms will be combined, so I'll use that as part of my justification ;).
Here's the list:
Tyrant w/ Tenderiser, Heavy Armor, 2 Gnoblar Thiefstones, Luck Gnoblar - 291
Butcher w/ Hellheart, Tooth Gnoblar - 185
Butcher w/ Bangstick, Dispel Scroll, 2 Tooth Gnoblar - 190
Butcher w/ Bloodcleaver, Dispel Scroll - 180
3 Ogre Bulls - 105
3 Ogre Bulls, extra hand weapon - 117
3 Ogre Bulls, extra hand weapon - 117
6 Ironguts w/ Bellower, Standard Bearer, Rune Maw - 338
20 Gnoblar Fighters w/ Groinbiter - 42
20 Gnoblar Fighters - 40
20 Gnoblar Fighters - 40
2 Leadbelchers w/ Bellower - 120
2 Leadbelchers w/ Bellower - 120
3 Yhetees - 195
Dogs of War Cannon - 85
Dogs of War Cannon - 85
Total Army Cost: 2250
Tyrant and Bloodcleaver Butcher in the Irongut unit. Other Butchers in with the Ogre Bull units.
Mostly unassembled and unpurchased. Needs a lot of playtesting also. No idea how well it will work, but I'll certainly give it a shot!
Thoughts?
I'm very interested in starting Fantasy, but I'm sooooooo slow at painting. I'm looking for an army that has low model count that is still competative (not tourney, but still fun), any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteI would love to play an Ogre Kingdoms army but I'm already stretched on budget to play two 40k armies and I really can't afford to get into a new system. I look forward to seeing how your army pans out though.
ReplyDeletei almost played ogre kingdoms but got high elves instead. i like their magic its very different but can easily be countered. im going for lizardmen next so watch this space, but have to finish my 40k chaos first. also if money is an issue there are other games out there not too expensive to collect and in 2010 will be coming into their own. the main 1 is warmachine, which despite collecting GW my whole life i love warmachine its more tactical the models are sweet and its very cheap to collect. 1 £30 box gives you a playable army and in that is you warcaster (leader) and 2 - 4 warjacks depending on the army you choose. your warcasters are so sick and strong but they need to be coz the warjacks can pound them down fast if your not careful. worth a look if you want a variety but dont have much funds. and new rules out this year which ive ben playtesting (they dont keep secrets like GW they want feedback) http://privateerpress.com/ check it out
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely interested in Warmachine as well but that also has time and money commitments that make it hard. I'm probably going to pick up some warjacks to go with my other non GW models I use in friendly 40k games. That way I'll be able to get even more use out of fun models.
ReplyDeleteyeah they make great dreadnoughts, the cryx ones would be great for chaos dread with 2 cc weapons :P and the new plastic kits let you have diff weapon options if your good with magnets
ReplyDeletequick question how do you get the xbox thing on your blog?
ReplyDelete@Sgt. Brisbane: Low model count, but still good... hmm. Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Chaos Daemons or Warriors are all top-tier armies that can be done with few models. They also (aside from Warrior) have enough variety to make for some different army builds that could do well.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a verrrrrrrrry slow painter. Slowly making progress though, finally :).
@Pete W: Totally understand! I spent literally every sent I made while working part time in college on Games Workshop stuff. That means I have tons of random things, including the Ogre Kingdoms big box, etc etc. I still have a lot of work to do to even get them fieldable, but this will help focus my purchasing at least :)
ReplyDeleteNoveltyboy: High Elves are great, they are actually a decently competitive army (and ASF really helps). Ogre Kingdoms magic does suck, but hopefully some good play (and a little luck) will at least make them feasible. They have such terrible matchups though that it will be an uphill battle.
ReplyDeleteI do play Warmachine occasionally- I played Warmachine from it's first release up until about Apotheosis (then had to move away from my gaming group :( ). I own a sizeable Cryx force, and I love the system- it's a nice change of pace from the GW games. Nice models also :). I don't know about more tactical. All a matter of perspective, I suppose ;).

For the record, if I can't use Dogs of War or Rhinox riders (I'm not sure if they are 'official' any longer), the cannons and the groinbiter would get dropped and two individual Maneaters with Great Weapons would be added.
